A love of high heels
There is as yet no scientific evidence of a link between wearing heeled shoes and the development of varicose veins; however, phlebologists believe that high heels cause problems with blood circulation in the legs.
First, let’s work out what counts as a high heel in terms of the load on the legs:
- A heel of 2-8 cm is considered comfortable for most women.
- A heel of 10-11 cm will complement any outfit perfectly, but suits fewer women.
- A heel of 12 cm or higher looks striking, but the foot is in an awkward position in such shoes, which leads to impaired balance and poor stability.
When you wear high heels, especially stilettos, the load on the legs is redistributed: your weight shifts onto the front of the foot and the load on the spine changes, which leads to excessive tension in certain muscles. Circulation is thought to suffer too, because the contraction of the leg muscles during walking helps to “push” blood up through the veins towards the heart. Many stiletto lovers know the unpleasant consequences: the legs tire quickly and swell by the evening, the muscles ache, and over time the foot may become deformed. And if a woman has venous disease that shows up as spider veins, varicose veins or swelling, the discomfort becomes worse. Varicose veins often spoil all your plans for a beautiful outfit that you would like to set off with a gorgeous pair of stilettos. In addition, they are often accompanied by pain, increased leg fatigue and other unpleasant sensations.
Here are a few useful tips – follow them, and may pain and heaviness in your legs never trouble you:
- Know that you are attractive in everyday clothes and shoes too. The main thing is to find your own style and feel great.
- Even if your job or your personal preferences require you to wear high heels, do not wear them unnecessarily! You can travel to work or to a special occasion in comfortable shoes.
- Take contrast showers or contrast foot baths.
- Do not forget about walking and exercise.
- See a phlebologist for advice in good time.
- For problems with the leg veins, doctors prescribe venotonics. One of the most frequently prescribed venotonics is Phlebodia 600*, which is manufactured in France. Phlebodia 600 helps reduce the main symptoms of varicose veins: pain, swelling and heaviness in the legs.
Take care of yourself and listen to your body!
